Charles University’s ice hockey team wins Battle on Ice
Charles University’s Hockey team (Team UK) triumphed in the highly anticipated Battle on Ice on October 31st, downing the Prague School of Economics‘ team by a score of 4:0 in the final.
The Battle on Ice is a unique project ran by student organizations from four major universities from Prague; the other two schools that compete are the Czech Technical University and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague.
Each year, the four university teams face each other during a one-day tournament in Tipsport Arena in Holešovice. The champion wins the Mayor’s Cup of the mayor of Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, and the prize money of 10,000 Czech Koruna.
Charles University’s Team UK has won the tournament – and with it the Mayor’s Cup – 7 times in 9 years. This year, Czech University of Life Sciences finished third in the event and the Czech Technical University fourth.
The competition was founded in 2011 and has since enjoyed great popularity among the players and students thanks to its unique atmosphere. Each year, students come dressed in the colors of their university, wear university clothes and contribute to the great atmosphere of the event by collectively cheering for their university’s team.
Besides the hockey matches, fun activities and games are prepared for all the fans. After the tournament, an after-party is held in the arena where students can celebrate together and with the players.
