Students are attracted to the Czech Republic by the quality of education
The quality of education or cultural proximity are the most common reasons why foreign students choose the Czech Republic as their destination. This is according to a survey conducted by the House of International Cooperation.
The vast majority of respondents rated their chosen study program as high quality. Four-fifths of students stated that their field has at least 70 percent high-quality teachers. Nearly half remained in the Czech Republic after completing their studies.
Half of those who are still studying want to pursue further education in the Czech Republic or find a job there. This was more often the response of students who are taught in Czech, which was nearly 70 percent of the respondents.
Slovaks, Ukrainians, and Russians were the most common nationalities. Students from these countries make up the largest proportion of foreign students in the Czech Republic. In the previous academic year, 38 percent of foreign students were Slovaks, 14 percent Russians, and ten percent Ukrainians.
According to Michal Uhl, the director of the House of International Cooperation, there will be fewer Russian students in the Czech Republic in the future. Those who are already studying here remain, but due to the war in Ukraine, new students are not being accepted, he stated.
Overall, the number of foreign students in the Czech Republic has been continuously increasing since 2002. In 2022, according to data from the Ministry of Education, they accounted for 18 percent of the 304,500 students at Czech universities.

While programs taught in Czech can be studied for free, students pay for studies in other languages. However, this might change in the future. „An amendment to the Higher Education Act states that universities themselves will choose their strategy; we leave it up to them,“ explains Deputy Minister of Education Jaroslav Miller. Therefore, decisions on tuition fees for studies in foreign languages would be made by the universities themselves.
